As keen as mustard

It must be my annual tired-from-winter period, but I feel like adding some brightness to my wardrobe. Don’t you have that too ? This time around February, when Christmas excitement has faded away, when you’re done eating chocolates and crepes, and think : ‘and now, what’s the next seasonal event to look forward to ?’ Well, unfortunately Spring isn’t exactly around the corner yet, but every year I try to act like we’re almost there by switching from my winter wardrobe to the almost-spring one, even if it’s still as cold as a canadian winter outside.

This year, I set my sight on mustard and saffron yellow. When I was a kid, yellow used to be my favorite color, and I used to justify myself by saying it is the “color of happiness”. I asked my parents to paint my bedroom in yellow, I always picked the yellow marker when I played board games, I thought a drawing without some yellow touch looked excessively sad…

But the thing is, yellow is a complex color when it comes to fashion. Pick the wrong tone and wear it with black, and you will look like a bee ! The mustard and saffron yellows are a great compromise : they spread happiness without the too-much effect ūüôā

Pleated skirt revival

In the 90’s, my mom had a friend whose mother was an unconditional fan of pleated skirts. To me, such type of skirt has always been¬†the symbol of (stylish) grandmothers. At that time, I would have never imagined that it would become a fashionable piece of clothing for young women. And yet, the pleated skirt has managed to turn itself into a trendy thing. Worse, it seems like it is here to last and isn’t far from becoming a fashionista must-have. Even worse, I¬†am now a big fan as well ! (Did I turn myself into a 27 yo grandmother ?)

I started by acquiring a burgundy one : low-profile enough so that I didn’t take to many risks at a time, but fun enough to satisfy my “I don’t dress like the others” concern. Wearable in winter and summer as well. It turns out, it’s one of my favourite skirt now, whether it is for fancy occasions or just a casual day at work.

Time to replicate now, and dare a more foolish version of the pleated skirt like one of these below !

Let it shine with silver and gold versions :

4 ways to update a simple little black dress

Don’t you often open your (full) closet and feel like you have nothing (new) to wear ? I do have that problem. As I can’t afford a new dress every morning, I had to come up with a cheaper, smarter solution. Take one of your “usual” dresses, aka the simple little black dress, and let’s¬†turn it into a wow-outfit with 4 simple little tricks !

  • Glamorize it with creative tights

Classic tights are boring. Try playing with textures : a pair of lace tights will instantly glamorize any little black dress. Polka dots will give you a sophisticated look. Geometric patterns will modernize your outfit.

  • Light it up with a printed scarf

We tend to underestimate the power of scarves : it gives any simple look this little “icing on the cake” touch.

  • Make it sparkle with a statement necklace

A statement necklace will  transform the top of the dress. You can also play with detachable collars if it matches the shape of your dress.

  • Add a pop of color around your waist

Black is elegant, but let’s admit it, it’s a bit sad. Add some fun with a colorful belt that will give an all new perspective to your look.

Back to (black) boots

Let’s talk here about a must-have piece in our shoe closet for fall & winter : black boots. It’s like the little black dress for our feet : how could we live without one, right ?

Although the point of black ankle boots is to fit with virtually any outfit, I like to dig up a pair with some special detail to make my feet stand from the crowd of mundane black boots.

Here is the resut of my hunt. Oh, and I almost forgot : we actually don’t need one, but TWO pairs in our closet : one flat, and one with heels ! (We can obviously have more, but here is the minimum requirement).

Let’s start with flat one, for long city walks, comfy days or Saturday shopping trips :

Party with Gatsby

Ah, the Swinging Twenties, one of my favorite period in history. Why ? Of course, there is a fashion reason behing that¬†: the 20’s represent a¬†decade of style and fabulous parties. Sparkly outfits, opulent jewels, flapper dresses, feathers and pearls : that was truly a time when¬†partying¬†meant dressing up with¬†style (and drinking champagne) !

Wouldn’t you love to step back in time¬†and have the chance to experience the pleasure of getting ready for and attending one of those Gatsby parties ?

Even though times have changed (sigh), let’s use¬†this 20’s inspiration¬†as a¬†way to bring style back to our parties (and even to our everyday lives, after all we only live once !). Okay, wearing a flapper dress with a feather headband might seem a bit inappropriate nowadays, but let’s start small with the accessories : perk up your look with¬†some Gatsby-inspired jewels¬†like the ones below !

  • Earrings : feathers¬†are a great way¬†to get noticed with¬†style and a bit of foolishness :

  • Bracelets : Etsy is just heaven for vintage jewellery, especially bracelets. Just type in “Art Deco bracelet” or “Gatsby-inspired cuff” and you will get some fabulous pieces like these ones :

  • Necklaces : the 20’s were about showing off. Put on your most impressive statement necklace ! (Stella & Dot has some very cute ones)

Feather (earrings) Fever

Spring has sprung ! We are finally on Daylight Savings Time mode, the sun is getting warmer and warmer, and when it comes to getting dressed we can finally consider to leave the house without the heavy winter coat.

In terms of fashion, every spring is like a mini-reinvention : whether it’s about wearing more colors, trying on a new kind of make up, ¬†or daring to buy clothes that I find¬†a little bit extravagant, I like to operate small changes to my style and try new¬†things.

This year, it appears I have a thing for feathers.*

If you’re familiar with my blog, you must have noticed my love for Gas Bijoux jewels. Their Spring/Summer collection is full of jaw-dropping, majestuous¬†feather earrings. I picked an orange-coral-pink combination for a colorful effect :

My Instagram wanderings often lead me to discover some cool, confidential small fashion brands. I recently stumbled across Youh Youh Les Indiens (what a cool name !) a hippie-chic French jewellery brand. I fell in love with these black feather earrings and instantly ordered online : super-affordable and uber-cute (and it even comes with a thank you note !)

Shopping Session

I haven’t been posting for quite some time now. Sorry, I was busy exploring a new source of inspiration : Instagram (here is my account).

And I also spent all this time catching up a little bit with real-life shopping (hey, it was Christmas and then Sales ! ). And it was worth it :

Holiday time : let go of the weight

Holiday season comes with two major changes in my fashion habits :

  • I can finally wear the outfits that I love but that I judged too extravagant for work (if I did, it must really be way beyond extravagant).
  • I¬†can trade the¬†“big handbag” I usually need to carry¬†on all the work stuff for a cute, convenient¬†mini-bag.

What a pleasure to let go of the weight of my everyday things (a purse full of useless loyalty cards, a makeup tote¬†with dozens of products I don’t even use during the day, some snacks ¬†I won’t even think of when I’m hungry) and¬†just take the essential. I know that a lot of you are having¬†a very hard time trying to sort through your things, but I can swear it’s worth a try !

Whether you’re just going for a walk, a shopping trip, or going to a party, it feels so much better to “travel light”. If you are planning a night out for New Year’s Eve, you might as well need a mini bag to feel free all night long !

My favorites :

  • Chlo√© – The brand is an expert in designing fashionista-heart-melting mini bags ! After the mini Drew, here is the Inez, a boho-chic mini bucket bag :

  • S√©zane – If you read my blog, you must have understood that I’m an unconditional lover of this brand : clothes, accessories, home decor, EVERYTHING is gorgeous. The iconic mini clark bag is a must-have (and it does come¬†in several colors) :

Jacket Upgrade

Feeling tired of always wearing the same basics ? You don’t necessarily need to upgrade your whole wardrobe to create a jaw-dropping look. Sometimes, a basic tee-shirt and a pair of jeans can lead to¬†wonderful results if you top it up with a unique,¬†out-of-the-mundane¬†piece : a statement jewel, a nice pair of shoes, a colorful scarf…

Today, let’s try with some beautiful eye-catching jackets : sequined blazer, embroidered jacket, colorful kimono, you’ve got the choice !

Color therapy

After the recent tragic events here in Paris, everybody tries to cope with the situation as they can. For a lot of us, our reaction consisted in¬†showing our¬†determination to continue enjoying the little things that make our lives worth it :¬†¬†going out, drinking wine at a terrasse, laughing with our¬†friends… I have been deeply moved by such a brave and optimistic reaction and really proud to be a part of it. Showing¬†so much positivity when facts are so negative is the smartest reply we could ever give back.

The idea sort of contaminated my fashion side and awakened a thought that pops up in my mind every once in a while : have you realized to which incredible point black and dark clothes usually dominate our wardrobes, especially during the cold season ?

Why don’t we match our outfits with our enthusiasm, our state of mind, our determination to be happy ?¬†Sure, black is easy to wear and to associate with other colors, but with a little bit of practice, you will realize that avoiding dark colors¬†(and still not looking like a clown) isn’t that difficult.

So let’s go out, smile and laugh, drink and party, with some happy, cheerful outfits !
